KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Immigration activists and attorneys were temporarily blocked from entering the federal building housing Kansas City’s immigration court this week, after security personnel accused them of soliciting on private property. Activist Jimbo Gillcrist, who was handing out flyers on legal rights outside the courthouse, was told to leave or face police action. Attorney Angela Ferguson, who attempted to intervene, was briefly denied access to her courtroom.
“I’m not asking for anything. I’m not selling anything,” said Gillcrist. “They told me if I didn’t leave right then, they’d call the police.”
The confrontation follows the recent detention of three immigrants by ICE agents outside the same courthouse, which Ferguson described as a tactic meant to discourage court attendance. “We want people to come to court and pursue what rights they do have. This is just the wrong way to go about it,” she said.
On Thursday, Judge Jayme Salinardi blocked a DHS request for expedited deportations, requiring all motions be submitted in writing. He also warned defendants that missing court hearings or deadlines could result in deportation and urged them to seek legal help—though local resources remain scarce.
