An estimated 150,000 Minnesotans would lose health insurance under Republican proposals to slash funding for Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act, according to a Senate Joint Economic Committee estimate released last week. Of those, 110,000 would be affected by Medicaid cuts, with another 40,000 losing ACA-based coverage.
Nationally, 13.7 million Americans are projected to lose coverage, based on Congressional Budget Office data. Meanwhile, the same GOP bill would increase tax cuts primarily benefiting high-income earners, adding an estimated $3 trillion to the deficit over the next decade.
The news coincides with a steep decline for Minnesota-based UnitedHealth Group, which has lost half its market value amid federal investigations and leadership turmoil.
Elsewhere in the state, lawmakers diverted $77 million from the proposed Northern Lights Express rail project to cover school worker unemployment benefits, prompting critics to declare the rail project “effectively dead.” Meanwhile, the EPA awarded $2.2 million for environmental cleanups, even as it scaled back other grants.
