MIAMI, Florida — Republican Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar is publicly challenging President Donald Trump’s immigration enforcement policies, using a new campaign ad to warn that Hispanic voters who supported him in 2024 now feel “betrayed.”
“Mr. President, some of your immigration enforcement efforts have gone too far,” Salazar says in the ad, filmed outside the White House. She pointed to July detention figures and urged Trump to “be careful” about advice he receives on immigration. CBS News and Reuters independently reported the remarks Thursday.
Salazar, whose South Florida district includes a large Hispanic population, endorsed Trump in 2024 and has generally supported his presidency. However, she has long advocated an immigration approach combining stronger border enforcement with legal protections for some undocumented immigrants already living in the United States.
Her criticism comes as Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrests have increased sharply. Reuters reported that ICE took nearly 51,000 people into custody in August, setting another monthly high, while more than three-quarters of recent arrests involved people without criminal records.
Salazar is seeking another House term against Democratic nominee Eliott Rodriguez. Her ad argues that Trump can pursue immigration enforcement without granting amnesty while providing undocumented residents what she called “a dignified life.”
