TALLAHASSEE, FLORIDA — The Florida Legislature has approved a bill authorizing the renaming of Palm Beach International Airport as President Donald J. Trump International Airport, sending the proposal to the next stage of review.
House Bill 919 passed the state Senate 25–11 after clearing the House earlier. The change would require approval from the Federal Aviation Administration and a finalized agreement between Palm Beach County and the trademark holder for commercial use of Trump’s name.
Sen. Debbie Mayfield (R-Indialantic), the bill’s sponsor, said the airport would not pay royalties and that Trump would receive no financial compensation for the use of his name. However, she acknowledged nothing in the legislation would prevent Trump from profiting from merchandise bearing the airport’s name.
Democratic lawmakers raised concerns about potential indirect financial benefits and the precedent of naming an airport after a sitting president. Sen. Carlos Guillermo Smith (D-Orlando) argued the move could subsidize Trump’s branding efforts. Sen. Tina Polsky (D-Boca Raton) questioned whether the decision was premature, citing ongoing political controversies.
Supporters, including Sen. Jonathan Martin (R-Fort Myers), said Trump’s reelection and prior term justify the honor.
A bill analysis noted potential local government costs associated with renaming, though no state funds are directly appropriated.
