TALLAHASSEE, Florida — The Florida Bar said it mistakenly stated that an ethics investigation was underway against Lindsey Halligan, a former acting U.S. attorney who previously pursued cases against President Donald Trump’s political opponents.
According to reporting from The Hill, a spokesperson for the bar confirmed that no active investigation currently exists despite earlier communication suggesting one had been opened.
Jennifer Krell Davis, director of communications for the Florida Bar, said the organization sent a letter to a complainant that incorrectly stated an investigation was pending. “There is no such pending Bar investigation of Lindsay Halligan,” Davis said in a statement.
The clarification came one day after the bar appeared to confirm an investigation when officials said they do not comment on active cases.
A person familiar with the matter told The Hill the organization instead opened what is known as a “monitor file,” a standard process used when an attorney is involved in ongoing legal proceedings. The process allows the bar to track the outcome of a case before deciding whether further action is necessary.
Halligan served briefly as acting U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia before a federal judge ruled her appointment unlawful. The decision led to the dismissal of prosecutions she brought against former FBI Director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James.
