Sacramento, CA — Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.), a seven-term congressman known for his aggressive opposition to Donald Trump, announced Thursday night that he is running for governor of California. His entry adds another high-profile contender to an already crowded field competing to replace Gov. Gavin Newsom, who is term-limited.
Swalwell, 45, first gained national attention as an Alameda County prosecutor and later as a sharp critic of Trump. He briefly ran for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination and later served as a House impeachment manager during Trump’s second impeachment trial. On Capitol Hill, he spent eight years on the House Intelligence Committee and became a leading Democratic voice on national security, election interference and youth engagement as a founding member of the Future Forum caucus.
The race remains wide open. Early polling showed former congresswoman Katie Porter leading, though concerns over her temperament have weakened her standing. Other Democratic contenders include former Los Angeles mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, former attorney general Xavier Becerra and former state controller Betty Yee. Republicans in the race include Riverside County sheriff Chad Bianco and former David Cameron adviser Steve Hilton, while developer Rick Caruso is reportedly considering a bid.
The next governor will face steep challenges, from water shortages and education gaps to housing shortages, homelessness and persistent fiscal pressures. Democrats increasingly want a candidate who will confront Trump’s agenda, and Swalwell plans to present his anti-Trump record as an asset.
Swalwell has denied recent allegations referred to the Justice Department by a Trump administration housing official, as well as past claims regarding a suspected Chinese operative, which the House Ethics Committee closed without findings.
