Heather Honey, a 2020 election denier and ally of lawyer Cleta Mitchell, has been appointed deputy assistant secretary of election integrity at the Department of Homeland Security, where she will help oversee U.S. election infrastructure. Honey previously promoted conspiracy theories cited by Donald Trump before Jan. 6 and assisted in partisan ballot reviews after the 2020 election.
Experts and state officials warned the appointment could erode trust in DHS, which since 2016 has been tasked with protecting election systems from foreign interference. “We are witnessing a dangerous trend: the elevation of known bad-faith actors like Heather Honey,” Arizona Secretary of State Adrian Fontes said.
Her hiring comes as the Trump administration has gutted DHS’s cybersecurity election programs, disbanded Justice Department initiatives countering foreign influence, and threatened to cut $28 million in security grants if states don’t change voting rules. Critics say the moves undermine U.S. election protections.
