WHEATON, Illinois — Authorities in DuPage County are investigating the death of a detainee who suffered a medical emergency shortly after being taken into custody following a court conviction.

According to officials with the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office, the individual was taken into custody around 4:30 p.m. on February 10 after being found guilty in court. Roughly an hour later, at about 5:30 p.m., the detainee experienced what officials described as a medical emergency while in custody.

Emergency crews responded and transported the detainee to a nearby hospital. The individual was later pronounced dead. Authorities have not released the person’s name pending notification of family members.

The sheriff’s office confirmed that an investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the medical emergency and subsequent death. No additional details regarding the detainee’s health condition or the charges involved in the case have been publicly disclosed.

Deaths in custody typically trigger internal reviews and, in some cases, independent investigations to ensure proper procedures were followed. Officials have not indicated whether outside agencies are involved at this time.

Further information is expected once the investigation progresses and next of kin have been notified.
