The U.S. Department of Justice filed lawsuits against six states, including Michigan, for refusing to turn over complete voter registration rolls. Attorney General Pam Bondi said the action was necessary to ensure election integrity. “Clean voter rolls are the foundation of free and fair elections,” she stated.

The DOJ suits target California, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, New Hampshire, and Pennsylvania. In Michigan, Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson was named in the complaint filed in federal court. Benson said she has provided the DOJ with the state’s public voter files but refused to release personal data such as Social Security and driver’s license numbers.

“It’s important for every Michigander to understand what’s at stake here — the U.S. Justice Department is trying to get us to turn over the private, personal information of more than 8 million state residents,” Benson said, calling the request unconstitutional.

Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon argued states must comply under federal election laws, including the National Voter Registration Act. The DOJ says Benson’s response was “insufficient” and is seeking immediate judicial relief.
