Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis announced Friday that nearly 3,000 undocumented immigrants have been apprehended by state law enforcement, 500 of whom had criminal records.
At a news conference in Orlando, DeSantis also said 600 individuals were processed at “Alligator Alcatraz,” a detention facility in the Everglades drawing criticism over alleged human rights concerns. He proposed Camp Blanding as an additional detention site.
The Florida Highway Patrol will create a new immigration enforcement section. The Department of Agriculture is also building an interdiction station at the Alabama border to support these efforts.
DeSantis said 1,800 troopers have received immigration training under the 287(g) agreement with ICE, with 100 deputized as U.S. Marshals. He added that all 67 county sheriffs now participate in the program.
Operation Tidal Wave, a joint action with ICE, led to 1,120 arrests in April — the highest in any one state.
“There’s no other state in the country that can match our efforts,” DeSantis said. “We’re showing that it can be done.”
