Nashville, Tennessee. Democrats are mounting an intense push in Tennessee’s 7th Congressional District ahead of the Dec. 2 special election, viewing the race as a final test of momentum after a strong series of victories this fall. Former Vice President Harris and Democratic National Committee Chair Ken Martin have campaigned for Democrat Aftyn Behn, while outside Democratic groups have invested heavily to boost her challenge against Republican Matt Van Epps.

Van Epps, a former state official and military veteran, is endorsed by President Trump, who recently headlined a tele-rally for him. Pro-Trump organizations, including MAGA Inc., are also spending in the deep-red district. Democrats acknowledge the uphill fight but say even narrowing the margin in a district Trump won by more than 20 points would signal progress.

The seat opened after GOP Rep. Mark Green resigned this summer. The current district lines include portions of Nashville, improving Democratic performance compared with 2018, when the city was excluded. Early voting is underway.

Behn has campaigned on local issues such as health care, infrastructure and hospital funding, while attacking Republicans over Trump’s tax legislation and their handling of the Epstein files. Van Epps has emphasized affordability, job creation and national security, while GOP groups have attempted to cast Behn as out of touch with the district.

Turnout remains the central unknown. Strategists in both parties note Tennessee’s low participation rates and restrictive voting rules, creating challenges ahead of a low-turnout special election.
