AUSTIN, Texas, U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett holds an early advantage in the Texas Democratic primary for U.S. Senate, leading state Rep. James Talarico by eight points, according to a new Texas Southern University poll released Friday. The survey of 1,600 likely Democratic primary voters found 51 percent backing Crockett and 43 percent supporting Talarico, with 6 percent undecided. It is the first public poll since Crockett entered the race earlier this week and former Rep. Colin Allred dropped out ahead of the filing deadline.
Crockett’s lead is driven by overwhelming support from Black voters, 89 percent of whom say they plan to back her. Nearly half of Black voters also said they did not know enough about Talarico, highlighting a significant name-recognition gap. Crockett, known nationally for her fiery exchanges with Republicans in congressional hearings, has argued she can mobilize seldom-engaged Democratic voters in a state where turnout often lags.
Talarico, who has emphasized coalition building and appeals to younger and more moderate Texans, leads Crockett among white and Latino voters and holds a 29-point advantage with voters ages 18 to 34. However, Crockett maintains a strong edge among voters over 55. Crockett’s name recognition stands at 94 percent, compared to Talarico’s 79 percent.
Talarico’s campaign framed the results as promising, noting that the race remains competitive before significant advertising begins. Crockett’s campaign did not immediately comment.
