Baton Rouge, Louisiana — Republican Sen. Bill Cassidy said Sunday that Donald Trump Jr. should provide proof that he repaid Russian businessman Umar Kremlev after reports that Kremlev covered hundreds of thousands of dollars in expenses tied to Trump Jr.’s wedding celebrations in the Bahamas.
Speaking on CBS’s Face the Nation, Cassidy said repayment would matter but added that accepting the gift in the first place created serious appearance concerns because Trump Jr. is the president’s son. “Anytime someone gives a $250,000 gift and they have strong ties to the Kremlin, that’s wrong,” Cassidy said. He added that it “would be nice to have that kind of verified.”
ProPublica reported that Kremlev, president of the International Boxing Association, paid for major wedding-related expenses, including use of a private island and other festivities. The outlet described Kremlev as having close ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin and noted the boxing association’s past financial ties to Gazprom, Russia’s state-controlled energy company.
President Donald Trump said Friday that his son had told him he would repay Kremlev. Reuters separately reported that a source familiar with the matter confirmed plans for reimbursement. Public documentation proving that the repayment has actually occurred has not been released.
The issue has also drawn congressional scrutiny. Rep. Robert Garcia, the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, opened an investigation into Trump Jr.’s relationship with Kremlev and requested financial records related to the wedding arrangements.
Cassidy’s comments are notable because criticism has come from within Trump’s own party as well as from Democrats. His focus Sunday was narrower: whether the reported reimbursement can be independently verified and whether accepting such a large gift from a Kremlin-linked figure was appropriate given Trump Jr.’s proximity to presidential power.
