NEW YORK CITY, New York — Former White House adviser David Axelrod criticized the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) on Friday for its response to newly elected New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, calling it “shockingly gratuitous” and “deeply irresponsible.” Axelrod, who is Jewish, said on X that while antisemitism must be taken seriously, the ADL’s reaction to Mamdani’s victory went too far.
The ADL launched a new “Mamdani Monitor” following the Democratic mayor-elect’s win, pledging to track his policies and appointments for potential risks to the Jewish community. ADL CEO Jonathan Greenblatt said Mamdani has “promoted antisemitic narratives” and expressed hostility toward Israel, warning his leadership could endanger Jewish New Yorkers.
Mamdani, a Muslim and self-described democratic socialist, pledged in his victory speech to protect Jewish residents and promote unity across communities. Progressive Jewish group J Street also condemned the ADL’s actions, calling them “harmful” and “fearmongering.”
“The responsibility now is to engage constructively with the mayor-elect, not sow panic or demonize him,” J Street President Jeremy Ben-Ami said.
