Biddeford, Maine — Sen. Angus King said the man fatally shot by an ICE officer in Biddeford was not the target of the warrant that brought federal agents to the area.
The Associated Press reported that the man was a 26-year-old Colombian national who was shot Monday during an immigration operation. King said Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin told him the officer fired after the man allegedly tried to use his vehicle as a weapon during a pursuit.
DHS said the officer opened fire while fearing for public safety. The officer has been placed on leave while the FBI leads the investigation. Maine officials and immigrant-rights advocates have called for more transparency, including the release of evidence showing what happened.
The shooting was the second fatal ICE shooting in less than a week, following the July 7 death of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo during a traffic stop in Houston. AP reported that the Maine case is at least the ninth death from an encounter with federal immigration officials since Trump returned to office.
Officials have not released body camera footage; AP reported the agents were not wearing body cameras.
