The Alabama Republican Party voted Saturday to adopt a new rule allowing the party to disqualify elected officials who appoint Democrats during their term.
At the GOP Summer Meeting in Montgomery, 83% of attendees approved the bylaw, authored by former Senate candidate Suzelle Josey. The rule, aimed at enforcing party loyalty, requires partisan officials to only appoint Republicans.
“If you’ve run as a Republican and taken Republican support, then we expect you to appoint Republicans,” Josey said.
Party Chair John Wahl defended the change, arguing Democrats exclude opposing views. “You would never see a Democrat appoint a Republican,” Wahl said.
Democrats do not have a comparable rule in their bylaws.
Wahl also criticized the redistricting litigation that forced Alabama to draw a second majority-Black congressional district, calling race-based districts “inherently racist.” He argued for maps based on “communities of interest.”
The party also set qualifying dates for the 2026 midterms: Jan. 5–23 for state and county GOP candidates.
