AUSTIN, Texas — Texas Gov. Greg Abbott is urging Texans traveling in Mexico to remain vigilant following the killing of cartel leader Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera Cervantes during a Mexican military operation.

The Mexican army killed the Jalisco New Generation Cartel leader in an operation described as one of the government’s most significant blows against organized crime. Social media footage showed smoke rising over Puerto Vallarta and scenes of panic at the airport in Jalisco’s capital.

In a statement Sunday, Abbott said Texans’ safety is his “top priority” and encouraged residents in Mexico to follow guidance from the U.S. Department of State and stay in contact with the U.S. Embassy or nearest consulate. He warned that “situations on the ground can change quickly.”

State officials advised monitoring travel advisories, enrolling in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), avoiding high-risk areas, and following local shelter-in-place or travel restrictions if issued.

Austin-Bergstrom International Airport also alerted travelers that Global Entry services were temporarily unavailable, advising passengers to arrive early.

Authorities have not detailed potential retaliation risks, but officials continue to monitor developments as tensions escalate following the cartel leader’s death.
