In a sudden change of plans, former President Donald Trump announced he will not testify again in the ongoing $250 million civil fraud trial against him and his company. Trump, who had been expected to defend his business practices on Monday, stated on Truth Social, “I have already testified to everything & have nothing more to say other than this is a complete & total election interference (Biden campaign!) witch hunt.”
During his previous testimony on Nov. 6, Trump was confrontational, criticizing New York Attorney General Letitia James and Judge Arthur Engoron, calling James a “political hack” and accusing Engoron of bias. Trump’s decision mirrors that of his son, Eric Trump, who also chose not to testify, with Trump justifying the decision as a means to avoid redundancy.
Trump’s legal team, including Chris Kise and Alina Habba, have echoed his sentiments. Kise argued that further testimony is unnecessary, claiming their witnesses have already demonstrated the absence of fraud. Habba had previously expressed reservations about Trump testifying again due to a gag order restricting criticism of the judge’s law clerk.
The trial, which began on Oct. 2, is nearing its conclusion, with accounting expert Eli Bartov being the last of the 19 defense witnesses. Bartov testified that he found no evidence of fraud in Trump’s financial statements. The trial is set to proceed with rebuttal witnesses from the AG’s office, followed by closing arguments on Jan. 11. Judge Engoron anticipates several weeks to issue his ruling.
