President-elect Joe Biden’s administration has signaled it will cancel a move by the Trump administration to lift COVID-19 travel bans to the United States from most of Europe and Brazil.
The present administration previously said the bans would expire Jan. 26, six days after President Donald Trump leaves office.
The Trump administration said the restrictions can be lifted because mandatory COVID-19 testing before flights will ensure that infected passengers won’t be allowed to enter the United States.
Transition spokeswoman Jen Psaki said late Monday, however, that Biden will not allow the restrictions to be lifted.
“On the advice of our medical team, the administration does not intend to lift these restrictions,” Psaki, who will be White House press secretary under Biden, tweeted Tuesday.
“With the pandemic worsening, and more contagious variants emerging around the world, this is not the time to be lifting restrictions on international travel.”
