Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene has put forward a resolution to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. The resolution, which necessitates prompt consideration, alleges that Mayorkas has willfully allowed border crossings and has not defended the U.S. against what it terms an “invasion.” The resolution also accuses Mayorkas of not complying with the Secure Fence Act, which mandates a secure border.

The Department of Homeland Security, backed by congressional Democrats, views the impeachment effort as a misuse over policy disagreements, stating that Mayorkas has not committed any high crimes or misdemeanors. DHS has criticized the House Majority for what it sees as baseless attacks, diverting attention from more pressing legislative reforms needed for the immigration system.

The motion by Greene forces House leadership to act on the measure within two legislative days. Speaker Mike Johnson faces decisions on whether to bring the legislation to the floor, table it, or refer it to a committee. The resolution is part of a broader impeachment discourse within the GOP, with the party divided on the use of its impeachment powers.
