It has been discovered by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that leishmaniasis, a flesh-eating parasitic disease that is caused by sand fly bites, may be endemic in southern states like Texas.
Earlier, leishmaniasis was believed to be a disease only associated with international travel, but the CDC’s analysis has revealed that almost all non-travelers infected with the disease were caused by the same species of Leishmania.
Sand flies, which can carry the parasite that causes leishmaniasis, have been found in several southern and southwestern states and can be repelled by bug sprays containing DEET and killed by permethrin.
