In a surprising bipartisan move, 23 Republicans joined all House Democrats to block a resolution aimed at censuring Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) for her criticism of Israel. The vote ended 222-186 in favor of a procedural motion that prevented the resolution from reaching the floor.
The Republican votes were unexpected, given Tlaib’s contentious statements about Israel, especially as the only Palestinian American member of Congress. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) initiated the censure resolution, labeling Tlaib’s comments as “antisemitic activity” and criticizing her for protesting U.S. arms supplies to Israel and calling for an end to the Israeli occupation.
The blocked resolution also accused Tlaib of “leading an insurrection” after her participation in an anti-war protest at the Capitol. The protest, demanding a cease-fire, was organized by two Jewish groups.
Greene expressed frustration over the outcome, criticizing the Republicans who voted against her resolution.
