(Washington, D.C.) President Donald Trump on Sunday shared a fabricated claim that former President Barack Obama received $40 million in “Obamacare royalties,” amplifying a story from the satirical website Dunning-Kruger Times. The post, captioned “WOW!” on Trump’s Truth Social account, was seen by more than 11 million followers.

According to Media Bias Fact Check, the Dunning-Kruger Times is part of the America’s Last Line of Defense network, which explicitly identifies itself as a parody. Its About page states, “Everything on this website is fiction,” mocking readers who believe otherwise. The article falsely claimed the Department of Government Efficiency halted annual $2.5 million payments to Obama, a department that does not exist.

Fact-checkers and Reuters previously debunked similar “Obamacare royalties” stories earlier this year. The site’s owner, Christopher Blair, told Reuters that the hoax has circulated successfully for years because it “thrives on confirmation bias.”
