MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell told a federal judge on Wednesday that he is financially “in ruins” and unable to pay more than $50,000 in court-ordered sanctions to voting software company Smartmatic. The penalty stems from a failed defamation lawsuit over Lindell’s false claims about the 2020 election.
In a Zoom hearing before U.S. District Judge Carl Nichols, Lindell pleaded for more time, saying he has no funds to pay the $56,369 sanction. “I borrowed everything I can. Nobody will lend me any money anymore,” Lindell said. “I can’t turn back time… but I will tell you, I don’t have any money.”
Lindell cited recent financial troubles, including laying off MyPillow employees, losing warehouses, owing millions in taxes, and selling his homes. He said he could no longer afford $5,000 monthly payments previously proposed.
Judge Nichols gave Lindell until Friday to submit financial records under seal to verify his claims. Smartmatic’s attorney said the company would prefer a lump-sum payment but deferred to the court’s decision.
