The U.S. Air Force has suspended instruction on a documentary about the Tuskegee Airmen, the first Black military aviators, following President Trump’s executive order ending diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. The order has also led to the removal of materials about Women Air Force Service Pilots (WASPs), who served during World War II, according to an anonymous U.S. official.
The Tuskegee Airmen, whose combat success in World War II contributed to President Harry Truman’s 1948 desegregation of the armed forces, are widely celebrated for their contributions to U.S. history. Civil rights advocates argue DEI programs address structural inequities, while Trump and his supporters claim such programs prioritize identity over merit.
The Air Force stated it is conducting a curriculum review at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, where the suspended materials were used. Officials pledged to implement Trump’s orders “with utmost professionalism.”
