In response to Florida’s restrictions on how Black history can be taught in schools, churches are stepping in to fill the educational gap. Pastor Sharon Riley of Agape Perfecting Praise & Worship Center in Orlando has initiated an African-American history masterclass for her congregation. The classes are in direct response to the state’s political climate, which has led to the banning of AP African-American history and restrictions on discussions that could cause discomfort or guilt.

Faith in Florida created the toolkit used for these classes and covers a wide range of topics, from the Transatlantic slave trade to the Civil Rights Movement and the killing of George Floyd. The course will culminate in a trip to Alabama to visit significant sites of the Civil Rights Movement.

Experts believe these toolkits are crucial for ensuring that the full picture of America’s history is known. Over 300 churches across Florida and the South have signed up to teach using this toolkit.
