The U.S. House of Representatives, under Republican control, has formally authorized an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden, focusing on allegations involving his son, Hunter Biden’s foreign business dealings. The vote, which followed party lines, came after Hunter Biden declined a request to testify behind closed doors. The White House has criticized the inquiry as factually unsubstantiated and politically motivated.

Republicans argue that the Bidens profited from Joe Biden’s tenure as Vice President, especially through Hunter Biden’s business in Ukraine and China. However, no evidence has been provided to show that President Biden took actions benefiting these businesses or gained financially.

The inquiry is unlikely to lead to Biden’s removal from office, given the Democratic majority in the Senate. But it could influence the narrative for the 2024 presidential campaign. Republicans claim the inquiry is a legitimate fact-finding mission, while Democrats question its legitimacy, citing a lack of evidence.

Hunter Biden, facing his legal challenges, including drug use and tax issues, has stated his willingness to testify publicly, fearing misrepresentation in a closed session. He denies any financial involvement of his father in his business affairs.

This impeachment inquiry, according to President Biden, distracts from more pressing issues like domestic priorities and aid for Ukraine and Israel. The House’s move represents a significant step in the ongoing political battle leading up to the 2024 elections.
