Representative Lauren Boebert has suggested that the COVID-19 vaccine could be responsible for President Joe Biden’s health issues. Boebert’s comments followed Biden’s performance in the June 27 presidential debate against former President Donald Trump, which raised renewed concerns about his age and health. During the debate, Biden, 81, appeared hoarse and stumbled through some answers, causing panic among Democrats, some of whom are urging him to withdraw from the race as polls show Trump leading in several swing states.
Biden’s campaign has attributed his debate performance to a cold, downplaying worries about his cognitive abilities. Experts in cognitive health have also stated that the debate performance alone is not necessarily indicative of cognitive decline and that there could be other explanations.
In a post to X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday, Boebert, a Colorado Republican, questioned the cause of Biden’s perceived decline, suggesting a link to his COVID-19 vaccinations by posting four photographs of Biden receiving the vaccine and booster shots.
Public health experts have refuted claims that the COVID-19 vaccine leads to cognitive decline, emphasizing that the vaccine is safe and effective in preventing the spread of the virus. However, a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine in February noted that individuals infected with COVID-19 might exhibit signs of cognitive decline, although it called for further research.
