Speaker Mike Johnson has formally extended an invitation to President Joe Biden to deliver the State of the Union address on March 7. This invitation is a part of the President’s constitutional obligation to report on the state of the nation. The chosen date, March 7, is relatively late for the annual address to Congress, with Biden’s previous addresses being earlier in the year (February 7 in 2023 and March 1 in 2022). The address coincides closely with this year’s Super Tuesday on March 5.
In this upcoming State of the Union address, President Biden is expected to highlight his administration’s policy achievements and future priorities. The focus of last year’s speech was on the nation’s economic recovery post-pandemic and the ongoing war in Ukraine. The State of the Union address is traditionally followed by a response from a representative of the opposing party, although the Republicans have not yet announced their speaker for this occasion.
