Montgomery County, TX — A Texas man has been arrested and charged after authorities say he secretly gave abortion medication to a pregnant woman without her knowledge, resulting in a miscarriage.
According to the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, Jon Rueben Gabriel Demeter of Spring was arrested Feb. 23 and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon causing serious bodily injury-family violence. He is being held without bond. Investigators allege Demeter previously encouraged the woman to obtain an abortion and offered to pay for out-of-state travel before allegedly administering the medication without her consent.
Texas law bans most abortions following the overturning of Roe v. Wade, with limited exceptions. Despite the ban, abortion medications such as mifepristone and misoprostol continue to be accessed by residents through mail-order services. In 2025, Gov. Greg Abbott signed the Texas Woman and Child Protection Act, creating civil penalties of up to $100,000 for distributing abortion pills in the state.
The case follows a similar prosecution in Parker County involving a former Department of Justice staffer charged in connection with alleged misuse of abortion medication.
Federal policy allowing mail-order dispensing of abortion pills remains in effect, and the Department of Justice is contesting state lawsuits challenging those regulations.
