According to a recent Harvard CAPS-Harris poll, 55% of voters believe former President Trump has committed crimes warranting conviction. This sentiment emerges as Trump faces the first of four criminal indictments in New York. Additionally, 53% of respondents feel that Trump’s legal issues render him an unviable candidate for the presidency, despite his ongoing campaign efforts.

Interestingly, 57% perceive the legal actions against Trump as “lawfare,” a tactic used by Democrats to eliminate political rivals through legal means, while 43% view the prosecutions as fair and non-political. When asked about the likelihood of conviction, voters were split, with 49% believing Trump will be convicted and 51% thinking he will not.

Trump is currently on trial for falsifying business records related to a hush money payment to adult film star Stormy Daniels during the 2016 election. Half of the respondents believe this case is due to Trump’s criminal actions deserving punishment, while the other half think it’s an attempt to force him out of the presidential race.

Despite these legal challenges, voters’ support for Trump remains strong. Even if Trump is convicted for crimes related to document handling or election interference in Georgia, the poll suggests a near-even split in support between Trump and Biden for the upcoming election. If Trump is convicted for inciting the Capitol riots, he holds a 4-point lead over Biden.

The poll was conducted among 1,961 registered voters on April 24-25, with a margin of error of plus or minus 2 percentage points.
