This comes seven months after a deadly attack on Israel by Hamas, which Biden has called the deadliest day for Jews since the Holocaust.

Biden’s speech aims to address the divisive U.S. debate about Jewish security, Zionism, free speech, and support for Israel. His address comes amid a rise in antisemitic attacks in the U.S. since the Hamas attack, and criticism of Israel’s retaliation in Gaza, which has sparked protests in the U.S.

Biden, who has mostly avoided addressing campus demonstrations or protesters over his support for Israel, will condemn the rise in antisemitism while affirming support for free speech. This comes at a crucial political moment for Biden, who may be losing support from young and liberal Democrats over his stance on Israel.

Meanwhile, Trump has sought to exploit Democratic divisions over Israel’s response and widening college protests to improve Republicans’ standing with Jewish voters. The FBI reported a 36% increase in anti-Jewish hate crime incidents between 2021 and 2022, and the Secure Community Network (SCN), an American Jewish security organization, has referred more than 504 individuals to law enforcement this year, including threats at colleges.
