WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Donald Trump is backing a Republican-led proposal to fund the Department of Homeland Security while delaying funding for certain immigration enforcement operations, according to the White House.
The plan would temporarily fund DHS without including money for Immigration and Customs Enforcement removal efforts, with Republicans aiming to secure that funding later through the reconciliation process alongside portions of the SAVE America Act. That approach would allow passage without Democratic support.
A White House official said discussions are ongoing but described the proposal as an “acceptable solution.” Senate Republicans expressed optimism after meeting with Trump, with Sen. Katie Britt saying lawmakers believe they have a path to ending the shutdown, now entering its sixth week.
The shift marks a change in Trump’s position, as he had previously insisted that DHS funding be tied directly to passage of the SAVE America Act.
The prolonged funding lapse has disrupted operations nationwide, including at airports where TSA staffing shortages have led to long lines. The administration has responded by deploying ICE agents to assist with screening operations.
