Donald Trump shared messages Tuesday from NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte congratulating him on U.S. airstrikes in Iran and a ceasefire deal, as Trump heads to the Netherlands for this week’s NATO summit. Rutte praised Trump’s “decisive action,” calling it “truly extraordinary” and credited the U.S. president with unifying NATO leaders behind a major defense agreement.

“You are flying into another big success… we’ve got them all signed onto 5 percent!” Rutte wrote in the texts, which Trump posted to Truth Social. The upcoming agreement will require all NATO members to spend at least 5% of GDP on defense, up from the current 2% guideline.

Under the plan, 3.5% will go to conventional forces, and 1.5% to infrastructure and cybersecurity. Trump has pushed for the hike since returning to office, arguing that European allies must contribute more to shared defense.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz insisted the move is not a concession to Trump, but a response to Vladimir Putin and the war in Ukraine.
