Donald Trump on Friday publicly rejected the assessment by Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard that Iran is not currently building a nuclear weapon. When pressed by a reporter in New Jersey about Gabbard’s March testimony, Trump said, “She’s wrong,” adding, “Then my intelligence community is wrong.”

Gabbard testified to Congress that while Iran’s uranium stockpile was unprecedented, the U.S. intelligence community had no evidence that Tehran had restarted its nuclear weapons program. Following Trump’s remarks, Gabbard pushed back on social media, claiming her testimony had been misrepresented and warning that Iran could produce a nuclear weapon “within weeks to months” if it chose to finalize construction.

However, that timeline was not included in her original testimony.

The exchange has fueled speculation about Gabbard’s role within Trump’s inner circle as he considers military action against Iran. Vice President J.D. Vance defended Gabbard, calling her a key part of the administration and noting that conditions have shifted since March.

Trump has given Iran a two-week window for diplomacy before possibly authorizing a strike.
