President Trump on Friday again threatened to revoke Harvard University’s tax-exempt status, writing on Truth Social, “We are going to be taking away Harvard’s Tax Exempt Status. It’s what they deserve!” The move is part of Trump’s intensifying criticism of elite academic institutions, which he accuses of promoting political agendas.
Most U.S. colleges and universities, including Harvard, are tax-exempt under federal law due to their educational mission. Last month, Trump requested the IRS treat Harvard as a political entity and withdraw its tax protections. The administration also froze $2.2 billion in federal funding after Harvard declined to meet its list of demands.
Harvard has since filed a federal lawsuit, alleging the administration violated the school’s constitutional rights. University President Alan Garber recently apologized following internal reports on antisemitism and anti-Arab bias, pledging reforms to address campus tensions.
The IRS has not publicly responded, and Harvard did not comment on Trump’s latest statement.
