(Madison, Wisconsin) President Donald Trump issued pardons Sunday for a group of Wisconsin Republicans involved in the 2020 fake elector scheme, though the actions are largely symbolic since presidential pardons do not apply to state crimes. The list, shared by Trump’s pardon attorney Ed Martin on X, included former Dane County Judge Jim Troupis, attorney Kenneth Chesebro, former Trump aide Mike Roman, and electors Carol Brunner, Mary Buestrin, Darryl Carlson, Andrew Hitt, Kelly Ruh, Bob Spindell, and Pam Travis.
As News From The States reported, several of those pardoned face felony forgery charges in Wisconsin for their roles in submitting false Electoral College votes declaring Trump the 2020 winner. The 10 electors previously settled a civil lawsuit by acknowledging Joe Biden’s victory and agreeing not to serve as electors in any future Trump election.
Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) praised the pardons, calling state prosecutions “corrupt lawfare.” But Jeff Mandell, general counsel of Law Forward — the firm that sued the fake electors — said the pardons “send an unmistakable message that this White House disdains democracy.”
