Donald Trump on Friday called for the appointment of a special prosecutor to investigate the 2020 election won by Joe Biden, again falsely asserting that the race was stolen due to widespread fraud. “The evidence is MASSIVE and OVERWHELMING,” Trump wrote on social media. “Let the work begin!”
Trump’s call comes as his administration weighs a major foreign policy decision on involvement in the Israel-Iran conflict. His demand follows earlier efforts to portray Biden as mentally unfit, a claim the president has dismissed as a distraction.
Trump’s latest comments contradict findings from the Department of Homeland Security, which labeled the 2020 election “the most secure in American history,” and from his own first-term attorney general, who found no evidence of outcome-altering fraud.
If Attorney General Pam Bondi acts on Trump’s call, she may face legal and political challenges over appointing a prosecutor without Senate confirmation — an issue that previously led to the dismissal of special counsel Jack Smith’s case against Trump.
