Donald Trump declined to formally observe Juneteenth on Thursday, instead criticizing the rise of what he called “non-working holidays.” In a Truth Social post, Trump wrote, “Soon we’ll end up having a holiday for every once working day of the year,” adding, “It must change if we are going to, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”

The White House, through press secretary Karoline Leavitt, confirmed no proclamation would be signed and called it “a normal working day.” Trump had previously acknowledged Juneteenth before it became a federal holiday in 2021.

In contrast, Joe Biden marked the 160th anniversary by speaking at Reedy Chapel AME Church in Galveston, Texas, where Union troops once enforced emancipation. Biden warned against efforts to “erase our history” and reaffirmed support for the holiday, which he signed into law after George Floyd’s death sparked national protests.

Biden also criticized Trump’s push to restore Confederate names to military bases, calling the reversal “backward.”
