President Donald Trump sharply criticized both Israel and Iran on Tuesday for renewed fighting, just a day after announcing a ceasefire between the two countries. Trump had brokered a phased 24-hour truce that he believed would end what he called “the 12 Day War.” However, within hours of the ceasefire taking effect, missile strikes resumed, prompting Trump’s public outrage. Speaking from the White House before heading to the NATO Summit in The Hague, Trump expressed frustration over what he described as a breakdown in discipline by both countries.
“We basically, we have two countries that have been fighting so long and so hard that they don’t know what the f— they’re doing,” Trump told reporters.
In a stunning Truth Social post Tuesday morning, Trump issued a direct command to America’s longtime ally:
“ISRAEL. DO NOT DROP THOSE BOMBS. IF YOU DO IT IS A MAJOR VIOLATION. BRING YOUR PILOTS HOME, NOW!”
Trump said both sides were at fault:
“They [Iran] violated it but Israel violated it too. Israel, as soon as we made the deal, they came out and they dropped a load of bombs the likes of which I’ve never seen before. The biggest load that we’ve seen. I’m not happy with Israel. When I say okay, now you have 12 hours, you don’t go out in the first hour and just drop everything you have on them. So, I’m not happy with them, I’m not happy with Iran either.”
He added,
“But I’m really unhappy if Israel’s going out this morning.”
Hours later, Trump posted again on Truth Social, trying to reassure the public that the ceasefire was holding:
“ISRAEL is not going to attack Iran. All planes will turn around and head home, while doing a friendly ‘Plane Wave’ to Iran. Nobody will be hurt, the Ceasefire is in effect! Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
Trump also reiterated that Iran’s nuclear program would not recover:
“Iran is not going to be able to rebuild those nuclear facilities,” he said.
The remarks follow accusations from both sides that the other had violated the ceasefire overnight. An Iranian missile hit a residential building in Beer Sheva, Israel, killing four people, while Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz vowed to continue strikes against Tehran.
Despite the setbacks, Trump remained optimistic, telling NBC News Monday night he believes the ceasefire, which he named “the 12 Day War,” would last “forever.”
