President-elect Donald Trump criticized President Biden for awarding the Presidential Citizens Medal to former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) and Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.) for their work on the January 6 committee. Trump called the awards “fake medals,” accused the pair of destroying evidence, and mocked Cheney’s election loss as historic.
Trump also labeled Cheney, Thompson, and Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.) as “thugs” and blamed former Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) for Capitol security failures, claims that Pelosi and fact-checkers have refuted.
The medals honor Americans for service to the country. Cheney received a standing ovation during the ceremony, but other Republicans, like Sen. John Barrasso (R-Wyo.), accused her of fostering division.
