President Trump “absolutely has confidence” in Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, the White House said Monday, following revelations that Hegseth shared sensitive military planning details in private Signal chats.

The New York Times reported Sunday that Hegseth used a private chat to disclose U.S. strike plans in Yemen with his wife, brother, and personal attorney—his second known instance of doing so. A previous incident involved a separate Signal chat that inadvertently included The Atlantic’s editor-in-chief.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters Monday that Trump “stands strongly behind” Hegseth. The Pentagon maintains no classified information was shared in the messages.

The controversy follows a wave of Pentagon resignations and firings during a leak investigation. Former spokesman John Ullyot criticized Hegseth’s leadership in a Politico op-ed, saying the Pentagon is “in disarray.”

Hegseth, a former Fox News host and Army veteran, was confirmed in January after Vice President JD Vance broke a Senate tie.
