Former President Donald Trump and his supporters have expressed outrage and frustration over President Joe Biden’s decision to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race and endorse Vice President Kamala Harris. The sudden switch has been labeled a “coup” by some, who lament the resources spent targeting Biden.

Trump took to Truth Social, criticizing the timing and calling for the GOP to be “reimbursed for fraud,” arguing that his campaign had wasted resources attacking Biden only for the Democrats to change candidates abruptly. Conservative commentator Ian Miles Cheong echoed this sentiment, suggesting the move was a form of cheating. Former North Carolina congressman Madison Cawthorn also demanded legal action for a refund from the Biden-Harris campaign.

Steven Miller, a former senior advisor to Trump, expressed on Fox News that the Republican party had invested tens of millions of dollars in campaigns against Biden, only to see him replaced unexpectedly. This switch means Trump, now the oldest candidate in the race at 78, can no longer use Biden’s age as a key argument against him, as Harris, 59, presents a younger alternative.

Despite the sudden change, Trump’s campaign appeared prepared, releasing anti-Harris ads within an hour of Biden’s announcement. Trump had previously hinted at a potential Harris challenge, coining nicknames like “Laffin’ Kamala Harris.” The Trump-Vance campaign further indicated their readiness by stating they would not agree to a vice presidential debate until Harris chose her running mate.

The shift in the Democratic ticket has forced Trump’s campaign to adapt quickly, transitioning their strategy and rhetoric to focus on Harris, whom they plan to link to what they see as the failures of the Biden administration.
