President Trump’s announcement of a $500 billion AI initiative, “The Stargate Project,” has faced skepticism from Elon Musk, head of the Department of Government Efficiency. Musk, tasked with reducing federal spending, criticized the funding plan, stating on X: “They don’t actually have the money.”

The project, backed by SoftBank, OpenAI, Oracle, and MGX, aims to build AI infrastructure, creating hundreds of thousands of jobs. Trump praised it as a “monumental undertaking.” Technology partners include Arm, Microsoft, NVIDIA, Oracle, and OpenAI.

Musk claims SoftBank secured “well under” $10 billion for the initiative. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, responding to Musk, expressed respect but highlighted tensions rooted in their co-founding of OpenAI and subsequent disputes.

The White House has not commented. Altman, who supported Trump’s inauguration, remains integral to the project despite Musk’s public skepticism.
