Zohran Mamdani has won New York City’s Democratic mayoral primary, defeating former Gov. Andrew Cuomo in a high-profile ranked-choice race. Mamdani, a state legislator and progressive organizer, declared victory Tuesday night, stating, “We have won,” and pledging to be “a mayor for every New Yorker.”

Cuomo called Mamdani to concede, while independent Mayor Eric Adams posted the news with a sharp rebuke, warning that the city needs a leader “who’s proud to run on his record.” Adams previewed a tough general election challenge against Mamdani, who has proposed policies like free buses, rent stabilization, and expanded childcare.

Mamdani also vowed to oppose “Donald Trump’s fascism” and mass deportations, positioning himself as a national symbol for unapologetic progressive governance.

Supporters like Brad Lander and Cynthia Nixon joined Mamdani to celebrate his upset victory over the former governor.
