Former Rep. George Santos (R-N.Y.), who recently pleaded guilty to wire fraud and identity theft, announced Thursday that he will seek clemency or a commutation from President Donald Trump before beginning his seven-year prison sentence in July.

“I’ll take a commutation, clemency, whatever the president is willing to give me,” Santos told Piers Morgan on the host’s YouTube show Uncensored. Santos argued that the sentence for a first-time offender over “campaign matters” was excessive and politically motivated.

Santos confirmed he is currently preparing the paperwork to formally request intervention from the White House.

Elected in 2022, Santos was the first openly gay Republican elected to the House as a non-incumbent, representing New York’s 3rd Congressional District. However, he was expelled from Congress in 2023 after ethics investigations and a 311–114 bipartisan vote, following revelations about repeated fabrications during his campaign.

The Trump White House has not yet responded, but the president has previously granted clemency to political allies, including a Republican former Tennessee state senator convicted of campaign finance violations.

In his interview, Santos also attacked former Attorney General Merrick Garland, calling him “the most disgraceful” person to serve in that role and accusing the Justice Department of being weaponized under Garland’s leadership.

Santos concluded by expressing hope that Trump would intervene in what he sees as an unjust prosecution.
