Attorneys general from Washington D.C., Maryland, and 18 other states filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration over the mass firing of probationary federal employees, arguing the dismissals violated federal labor laws.
The lawsuit, filed in federal court in Maryland, joins several other legal challenges seeking to reinstate tens of thousands of terminated workers. The states allege that more than 20 federal agencies falsely cited “poor performance” in termination letters, when in reality, the administration was conducting a reduction in force (RIF) without following proper legal procedures.
Under federal law, agencies must provide 60-day advance notice of mass layoffs so states can mobilize support services for affected workers. The lawsuit argues that Trump’s administration failed to do so, creating economic instability and placing undue burdens on public assistance programs.
The attorneys general are asking the court for a temporary restraining order to halt further firings and reinstate affected employees. A hearing is scheduled for March 12.
