Over 100 people were killed and many others injured in two explosions at a memorial service in Iran for Qassem Soleimani, a top commander killed by a U.S. drone strike in 2020. The ceremony, held in Kerman at Soleimani’s burial site, was struck by two remotely detonated explosive devices. Iranian officials labeled these explosions as “terrorist attacks.”
Babak Yektaparast, a spokesperson for Iran’s emergency services, initially reported 73 fatalities and 170 injuries. However, state television later updated the death toll to at least 100. The perpetrators of these attacks remain unidentified, as no group has claimed responsibility.
The blasts occurred amidst a large gathering, causing chaos and panic. Videos from the scene showed numerous casualties, with some attendees attempting to help the injured while others sought to escape. Reza Fallah, head of the Kerman Red Crescent Society, expressed shock over the incident, stating that the attacks occurred despite stringent security measures.
This bombing coincides with heightened tensions in the region, especially between Iran and the United States, following Soleimani’s assassination and Iran’s subsequent retaliatory attacks on U.S. bases in Iraq. Soleimani, as the commander of the Quds Force, was a central figure in Iran’s military operations abroad. The ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, including Iran’s support for the Houthi militia in Yemen and the U.S. backing of Israel, continue to exacerbate regional instability.
