The White House on Wednesday defended Gen. Mark Milley, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, who is under fire from GOP lawmakers for reportedly pledging to warn the Chinese in advance of a U.S. attack and instructing subordinates to go through him to launch a nuclear strike during the final months of the Trump Administration, amid worries that President Donald Trump had become unhinged.

President Joe Biden said Wednesday, ahead of a roundtable with business leaders focused on vaccine mandates, “I have great confidence in General Milley.”

White House press secretary Jen Psaki called the reporting about a new book by Washington Post reporters Bob Woodward and Robert Costa “anonymous, unconfirmed reports” with “limited context.”

Psaki said President Joe Biden has “complete confidence” in Milley’s “leadership, his patriotism and his fidelity to the Constitution,” arguing he went through the “normal channels,” and that his actions were “a good thing, because obviously we want to prevent nuclear war.”
