Mississippi, the state with the highest Covid-19 fatality rate, has now become the first in the country to hit the morbid milestone of losing one in every 300 residents to the virus, with many of the deaths coming after the widespread availability of vaccines, but amid a low vaccination rate in the state.
As highlighted by Bloomberg reporter Steven Dennis, Mississippi surpassed this milestone as its death toll rose to nearly 10,000.
With its population of less than three million, this amounts to a rate of 335 deaths per 100,000 residents, or one in every 298.5 dead from the virus, according to data compiled by The New York Times.
No other state has a death rate as high as Mississippi’s, but New Jersey and Alabama are the closest contenders at 313 and 311 per 100,000 residents, respectively.
The rate is even higher in some of Mississippi’s hardest-hit counties, such as Neshoba, where one in every 141 residents died of Covid-19, and Clarke, where it’s one in every 165.
